Reduction Cheiloplasty (Lip Volume Reduction)
What is Reduction Cheiloplasty?
Reduction cheiloplasty, also known as lip volume reduction, is a surgical procedure that aims to reduce the size or prominence of the upper lip, lower lip, or both. This procedure may be considered by individuals who feel that their lips are disproportionately large in relation to their facial features.
When might this procedure be considered?
A reduction cheiloplasty may be suggested if:
- The upper lip measures more than approximately 9mm in thickness
- The lower lip measures more than approximately 13mm in thickness
- There is an imbalance in lip volume in relation to the overall proportions of the face
It is important to note that these measurements are general guidelines only. A consultation with a qualified health practitioner is required to assess individual suitability and to discuss expectations and outcomes.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure typically takes about one hour. It is commonly performed under local anaesthetic or with a nerve block.
Risks and complications
All surgical procedures carry risks. Potential complications of reduction cheiloplasty may include, but are not limited to:
- Bleeding or haematoma (a collection of blood under the skin)
- Infection
- Visible scarring
- Overcorrection, where too much tissue is removed
- Undercorrection, where less tissue than desired is removed
