Hair Reduction
How is unwanted hair treated?
Unwanted hair is a common problem affecting both men and women. Conventional hair removal techniques include waxing, threading, bleaches and depilatory creams. These techniques offer a temporary solution for unwanted hair and are to be repeated frequently or as and when the hairs re-grow.
Is there a permanent solution?
For individuals looking for permanent treatment, laser hair removal may be an ideal procedure. It is a very popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure.
Hair growth occurs in three stages – hair grows actively, then stops and the follicle shrinks, the hair growth resumes again forcing the old hair out of the follicle to make room for the new hair.
How is laser hair removal performed?
Laser hair removal uses low energy laser light which passes through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. This disables the hair follicle in the deeper layer of the skin and prevents hair re-growth. Hairs in the growing phase only respond to the laser treatment. Thus multiple sessions may be required to achieve optimum results. People with dark hair and light skin respond best and people with white, blond, or gray hair do not respond at all as the laser is absorbed as a function of melanin pigment in the hair follicle.
When should you avoid laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is contraindicated in conditions of pregnancy, epilepsy and herpes simplex viral infections. It is not recommended for use in patients with diabetes and in areas of sunburned skin. Following the IPL/laser treatment some patients may experience redness, itching, scarring, appearance of blisters, burning or prickling sensation at the site of treatment. If these effects are severe, consult Dr Michael Xu immediately.
