There are two main types of breast implant used in Australia: saline and silicone.
Saline-filled implants have silicone outer shells, but there is no silicone material inside the implant. Saline is entirely physiologic which gives an advantage when the saline implant ruptures, the saline is simply absorbed into the body with no health risk. However, its low cohesiveness can result in a water-balloon effect and therefore, are reported to look and feel slightly less natural than silicone.
Silicone implants have a silicone envelope that is filled with elastic gel, which has more cohesiveness producing a softer and more natural feel of the implant. Though if the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell or may escape into the area around the implant. Leaks may not cause symptoms but can at times cause pain, change in breast shape, feel and size.
